President Salva Kiir of South Sudan has dismissed Deputy Benjamin Bol Mel from all official roles, reverting his military rank from general to soldier and removing him from the National Security Service. This decision, attributed to a loss of confidence following Bol’s unilateral changes to the presidential guard, also includes the removal of his close associates. Key officials, including presidential adviser Tut Galuak, have been reinstated to enhance oversight of security and administrative functions. Analysts view this reshuffle as an effort by Kiir to consolidate power amid ongoing political and security challenges since the 2018 peace agreement, highlighting persistent internal disputes that may impact the stability of the Juba administration.
