Eritrean Afars are hosting a landmark conference in Ethiopia aimed at unifying their efforts against the ruling regime in Eritrea. Scheduled for December 28-30 in the Afar region, the event is organized by the Horn of Africa Policy Center and seeks to renew focus on the Eritrean Afar struggle against the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice.
The conference builds on prior discussions about the challenges faced by Eritrean Afars, aiming to establish a cohesive political vision and roadmap for future actions. It will facilitate the collaboration of various opposition forces, including political parties, civil society organizations, and independent figures, to address shared concerns and document human rights abuses suffered by Afars in Eritrea.
A key aspect of the discussion will be the transnational nature of the Afar community across Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Djibouti, emphasizing the critical role of these regions in providing support to Eritrean Afars escaping oppression. Topics on the agenda include the Afar people’s political demands, the geopolitical significance of the Dankalia region, and strategies for addressing ongoing human rights violations linked to the regime’s policies.
Organizers assert that this conference represents a vital opportunity for the Afar community to unite and advocate for their rights, aiming to create a solid foundation for political change in Eritrea amidst escalating regional dynamics
