The Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization (RSADO) has welcomed the recent decision by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) to formally transmit Communication No. 868/25 against the State of Eritrea.
This communication addresses significant, systematic, and long-standing human rights violations inflicted upon the indigenous Red Sea Afar people in the Dankalia region.
The ACHPR Secretariat has officially acknowledged receipt of RSADO’s submissions regarding admissibility and merits. Acting within its mandate under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the Commission has directed the Eritrean government to submit a response within sixty days.
“This decisive step marks a historic breakthrough in the Red Sea Afar community’s decades-long struggle for justice, recognition, and accountability. It sends a clear message: no state is above the African Charter, and no regime can evade scrutiny and responsibility indefinitely,” said a spokesperson for RSADO.
For decades, the Red Sea Afar community has suffered from state-engineered repression, including mass displacement, targeted persecution, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and systematic dispossession of their ancestral lands along the Red Sea coast.
The Commission’s action is a vital acknowledgment of the urgent need to address these human rights violations, emphasizing that such crimes can no longer be ignored or silenced.
RSADO expresses profound gratitude to the Commission for its swift and principled response, highlighting its commitment to protecting oppressed and marginalized communities across Africa. The organization also reaffirms its readiness to collaborate with the Commission throughout the proceedings in pursuit of truth, justice, and reparations.
RSADO encourages African Union Member States, regional institutions, international organizations, and relevant stakeholders to support the ACHPR’s mandate.
The organization calls for continued engagement through diplomatic and legal channels to protect human and peoples’ rights and to prevent further harm to affected communities.
