The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep concern regarding the deteriorating security situation in the Republic of South Sudan, particularly in Jonglei State, where escalating tensions and violence have resulted in significant civilian displacement.
Chairperson Youssouf is alarmed by reports indicating inflammatory rhetoric and actions that risk inciting further violence, thereby endangering civilian populations, including women and children. He emphasized that such developments contradict the letter and spirit of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
In his statement, Youssouf firmly condemned any calls for violence against civilians, reiterating that the protection of civilians is a fundamental responsibility for all parties involved in the conflict. He highlighted the importance of upholding humanitarian principles amidst the ongoing crisis.
While acknowledging the public commitments made by South Sudanese leaders to the peace process, the Chairperson expressed serious concern over ongoing violations of the Permanent Ceasefire and their detrimental humanitarian impact on the affected populations.
Youssouf urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to immediately de-escalate tensions while fully complying with their obligations under the R-ARCSS. This includes adhering strictly to ceasefire agreements, respecting established power-sharing mechanisms, and returning to inclusive, consensus-based decision-making.
Furthermore, the Chairperson urged South Sudanese stakeholders to prioritize the interests of the South Sudanese people above all other considerations. He called for the resolution of outstanding differences through dialogue and peaceful means, aiming to ensure the successful completion of the Transitional Period.
The African Union reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting the people and government of South Sudan in their pursuit of lasting peace, stability, and national reconciliation. The AUC will continue to collaborate closely with IGAD, the United Nations, and international partners to achieve these crucial objectives.
