4.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Mekelle and Surrounding Regions

On Sunday night at approximately 11:05 p.m., a 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck areas in Tigray and parts of the Afar region. Residents reported strong tremors in Mekelle around 5:05 p.m., with similar reports coming in from towns including Adigrat, Aksum, Shire, Maychew, Wukro, Adi-Gudem, Edagahamus, and Adwa.
The earthquake originated 60 km northeast of Mekelle, as noted by Volcano Discovery. This seismic event is part of a series of notable earthquakes in the region. In October 2022, a 5.7 magnitude quake resulted in significant destruction, displacing thousands and damaging over 1,400 homes, schools, health centers, and water points.
Currently, there are no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the latest earthquake.
