The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC) briefed ambassadors and diplomatic representatives in Addis Ababa regarding the progress of the National Dialogue and the challenges ahead.
Commissioner Ambaye Ogato, PhD, highlighted the initiative’s goal of mitigating unnecessary loss of life through dialogue. He identified significant challenges, including misinformation on social media, the ongoing situation in Tigray, and the boycott of the process by certain political parties.
Ambaye affirmed that the dialogue aims to foster sustainable national solutions and has thus far facilitated discussions that amplify marginalized voices. He urged international partners to provide consistent support to help navigate these obstacles and enhance citizens’ lives while promoting national cohesion.
Chief Commissioner Prof. Mesfin Araya reported that the Commission has reached 93 percent of the country’s geographical areas. He noted that while agenda-setting is complete in most regions, Tigray remains a significant hurdle. He called for strengthened international support, emphasizing the dialogue’s importance for Ethiopia and the broader region.
Recent reports indicated rising concerns over political participation from Tigray, with Deputy Chief Commissioner Hirut Gebreselasie stating a “deadlock” in advancing consultations due to unresolved issues between federal and regional entities.
