Malik Agar, Vice President of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, issued a stark warning regarding the potential collapse of Sudan as a result of the ongoing war, which he believes could also destabilize neighboring countries, particularly Ethiopia, Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt.
Speaking at a conference on the implications of the conflict organized by the Horn of Africa Studies and Research Center, Agar linked the war that began on April 15 to broader regional tensions, suggesting that events in Gaza were part of a larger destabilizing agenda. He criticized past governments for perpetuating cycles of conflict since Sudan’s independence and advocated for national healing, drawing parallels to the reconciliation processes in South Africa and Rwanda.
Agar highlighted historical grievances that have fueled current conflicts, including the arming of Arab tribes and significant atrocities leading to the secession of South Sudan. He noted that the ongoing violence, particularly from the Rapid Support Forces, is unique due to its diverse agendas and external financing, notably from the United Arab Emirates.
Concluding his remarks, Agar emphasized the need for a new approach to governance and conflict resolution in Sudan, urging the current leadership to convert the crisis into an opportunity for constructive change in the Horn of Africa.
