Ethiopia is on track to be officially confirmed as the host nation for the COP32 United Nations climate summit in 2027, with an announcement expected on Tuesday, according to COP30 President André Corrêa do Lago.
During the opening day of COP30 in Belem, Brazil, participating countries reached a preliminary agreement to hold the summit in Addis Ababa, marking Ethiopia’s first time hosting the annual UN climate conference.
Ethiopia’s bid, submitted in September and competing against Nigeria, received unanimous support from the Bureau of African Countries, as reported by Reuters.
Meanwhile, the selection of the host for the upcoming COP31 summit remains unresolved, with Australia and Turkey competing to host the 2026 conference. Corrêa do Lago urged the Western European group to reach a quick resolution; if not, COP31 will take place in Bonn, Germany, where the UN climate agency is headquartered.
A delegate from an industrialized country indicated that Ethiopia’s nomination is expected to proceed without issues.
