Eritrea has officially notified the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) of its decision to withdraw from the regional bloc, citing a failure to meet regional aspirations and uphold its mandate. The announcement, made by the Ministry of Information, emphasizes Eritrea’s concerns regarding IGAD’s neutrality and effectiveness.
Eritrea highlighted its significant role in revitalizing IGAD in 1993, aimed at promoting regional peace and economic integration. Despite efforts to reintegrate since 2018, and its formal return in June 2023 after a 16-year absence, Eritrea’s relationship with IGAD has remained contentious. Prior withdrawals were driven by dissatisfaction with the bloc’s stance on regional issues, including Ethiopia’s military intervention in Somalia.
