UN Secretary-General Antonio_Guterres has called on Ethiopia and Eritrea to reaffirm their commitment to the Algiers Agreement, as the landmark peace accord marks its 25th anniversary.
The statement, delivered on Friday by his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, comes at a time of renewed tensions between the neighbouring countries.
The Algiers Agreement, signed on 12 December 2000, formally ended the bloody border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea and established mechanisms for border demarcation while affirming the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both states.
The Secretary-General described it as a “crucial framework” that has underpinned peaceful relations for a quarter of a century.
Guterres also recalled that seven years ago the leaders of both countries renewed their commitment to peace through a joint declaration, calling it a testament to the value of dialogue and cooperation.
With tensions rising once again, the Secretary-General urged both governments to “recommit to the vision of lasting peace and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity embodied in the Algiers Agreement” and to strengthen efforts toward building cooperative, good-neighbourly relations.
He further encouraged Ethiopia and Eritrea to continue engaging with regional and international partners to advance development cooperation “for the benefit of all.”
