On Wednesday, during the 20th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Moroccan Caftan was added to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This inscription represents international recognition of Morocco’s artistic ingenuity and centuries-old craftsmanship, as well as the Kingdom’s commitment to safeguarding, promoting, and transmitting its cultural traditions. This achievement reflects Morocco’s ongoing dedication, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to preserving and conserving its cultural heritage.

Within the rich tapestry of Moroccan culture, the caftan stands as a cornerstone. Its historical significance, rooted in centuries of practice, is complemented by its social importance. Serving as a symbol of identity, social cohesion, and cultural and regional diversity, the caftan embodies a true “total social fact,” engaging the entire community in its design, production, and everyday use.
