The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), based in Rome, Italy, has recognized Ethiopia for its exemplary efforts in sustainable forest management.
The award was presented in the category of “Sustainable Forest Management and Utilization.”
Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa received the award on behalf of the Ethiopian government from the FAO’s Director General in Rome.
In a social media post, Minister Kassa highlighted the significance of the Green Legacy initiative, which has been an annual event engaging all Ethiopians under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
“The Green Legacy, which has evolved into a national movement, has begun to gain international recognition,” she said, emphasizing the collective effort that has led to the planting of over 48 billion seedlings and an increase in the nation’s forest coverage.
Previously, in January 2024, the FAO honored Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed with the Agricola Medal, acknowledging his commitment to food security and nutrition, as well as his innovative approaches to agriculture, including initiatives aimed at achieving wheat self-sufficiency.
