Djibouti has committed to deploying additional troops to Somalia to enhance efforts against the persistent threat posed by al-Shabaab. This announcement, made on Tuesday, underscores Djibouti’s enduring commitment to regional peace and security.
During his address at the United Nations General Assembly, Djibouti’s Permanent Representative, Mohamed Siad Doualeh, articulated the country’s dedication to supporting Somalia’s ongoing progress in state-building and security. However, he emphasized that significant challenges remain in the fight against terrorism.
In a strategic move, Djibouti and Somalia have signed a new bilateral agreement facilitating the deployment of additional Djiboutian forces. These troops are expected to strengthen ongoing operations against al-Shabaab and support stabilization efforts under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Ambassador Doualeh called upon the international community to intensify its assistance to Somalia, highlighting that terrorist attacks continue to endanger civilians, security personnel, and humanitarian operations.
Djibouti has been a key contributor of troops since the African Union first deployed peacekeepers to Somalia over a decade ago, maintaining a crucial role in stabilizing the Horn of Africa region.
