During the 3rd BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting, held alongside the 80th United Nations General Assembly, Ethiopia emphasized the need for BRICS member states to strengthen their collective efforts in addressing pressing global issues.

In his address, Ambassador Hadera Abera, State Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed gratitude to India for facilitating the session as the incoming BRICS Chair for 2026 and commended Brazil for its effective leadership during the 2025 Rio Summit.

Ambassador Abera underscored the current international landscape, characterized by armed conflicts, humanitarian crises, and setbacks in development, noting that these challenges disproportionately affect developing nations.

“BRICS is presented with a historic opportunity to mitigate tensions, promote peace, enhance multilateralism, and advance the Sustainable Development Goals,” he asserted.

The State Minister acknowledged the significance of the key declarations adopted at the Rio Summit related to climate finance, governance of artificial intelligence, and the fight against socially determined diseases, highlighting their potential to inform actionable strategies within BRICS.

He also welcomed India’s initiative to create a joint media statement that delineates BRICS priorities in economic, financial, and trade issues.

Emphasizing the expanding membership of BRICS, Ambassador Abera outlined three principal priorities: transforming declarations into concrete outcomes, advocating for equitable reform of global financial institutions to better serve the Global South, and exemplifying peaceful and amicable relations among member countries.

“Maintaining peace and security allows all individuals to enjoy equal opportunities for a dignified life,” he said, reaffirming Ethiopia’s commitment to collaborative efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace and development. The meeting concluded with the adoption of the Foreign Ministers’ Joint Media Statement
