The Government of Sudan has issued a strong condemnation of the horrific terrorist attack bombing of Al-Darraja Mosque in El-Fasher, which killed 70 people who were attending prayers and injured several others. The attack also caused extensive damage to the mosque building.
In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation denounced the attack as “a blatant violation of religious values and international conventions protecting places of worship and civilians.” The ministry specifically held the Al-Dagalo Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia accountable for this heinous act.
“Targeting houses of worship and killing innocents are defining traits of terrorist groups that the international community has long fought to eliminate,” the statement read, stressing the need for global attention against such violence.
The ministry also appealed to United Nations agencies, the African Union, and international human rights groups to take action against this terrorism against defenseless civilians.
The drone strike, which occurred amid the dawn prayers on Friday, has been characterized as devastating; with reports indicating that at least 75 people were killed.
The massacre has ignited an outburst of anger and condemnation across the people of El-Fasher and across Sudan. Citizens are calling for accountability for the attackers of the civilians in their worship centres and want justice and the cessation of violence.
